Other crew chiefs have wildly different experiences than I did though. It was about as boring as it could possibly get. Had a few exciting moments in air assaults and what-not, but that was the deployment where I decided I didn't want to fly any more. lots of flying around dropping off and picking up people for hours and days on end. I deployed to Afghanistan as a crew chief. That deployment was what made me realize I wanted to make a career out of it. It was a constant stream of fixing broke shit and doing scheduled inspections. I deployed to Iraq as a maintenance supervisor, in charge of 14 mechanics. If any of you have experience in 6 year contracts, or have heard stories from others with 6 year contracts, especially from the aviation jobs, I would love to hear them. The big thing for me is the massive 6 year contract required- while I'm sure I would like everything starting out, down the line, that is a lot of time serving and I don't want to get burnt out if I don't become a Warrant Officer as soon as I expect. My recruiter said it is usually pretty easy going Reserve to AD but not from AD to Reserve. I could go Reserve for the same MOS, then use my time not serving to make connections and pursue Warrant Officer as well which would probably be easier, however I do really want to go AD eventually. I spoke to the recruiter about all of the 15 series MOS that would put me around aircraft and pilots, and every single one of them had a 6 year minimum enlistment contract which is a pretty long time. Not gonna lie, the idea of enlisting sounds very appealing to me as I want the life experience to push me forward. My practical options for this so far are trying to go street to seat despite low credentials so far, (GED, 6 college credit hours by May, at 21 years old, average fitness), or enlisting then trying afterwards. I want to eventually become a Warrant Officer Pilot. Hi, so I am heavily considering going into the Army enlisted.
